What is MVR and how to keep a clean driving record

What Does A MVR Show?

A motor vehicle record (MVR) is a record of a driver’s driving history. An MVR records the driver’s traffic citations, vehicular crimes, accidents, driving under the influence (DUI) convictions, and the number of points on the individual’s driver’s licence. Furthermore, these records may include personally identifiable information (PII) such as age, date of birth, gender, eye colour, hair colour, weight, and height.

How to keep a clean driving record

A motor vehicle record (MVR) with a clean driving history is one that has not had any tickets, accidents, or other infractions for a predetermined amount of time. Your state maintains your MVR, and other organisations like your insurance provider and future employers can access it and make judgements about you based on what is in your record. Every drive should strive to make sure he or she has a clean driving record and this can be achieved by following the below steps.

1. Enrol in a defensive driving course

If you successfully finish a defensive driving course, several states may remove points or minor offences from your driving record. Before the points or infractions are removed from your MVR, your state’s DMV will want documentation that you finished the programme.

2. Contest any mistakes on your driving record

You can register a discrepancy with the DMV to get a mistake remedied if you find one, such as an accident you weren’t in or a violation that should have automatically erased after a set amount of time. The discrepancy procedure for your state is available on the DMV website. Be advised that getting around the process may take some time.

3. Dispute your ticket

Most people who receive a traffic ticket won’t challenge it in court, but if there are extenuating circumstances (you were speeding to get to the hospital during an emergency) or if the ticket is in dispute (a traffic camera caught you running a red light, but you did so to avoid being rear-ended by someone tailgating you), you may have a case to challenge the ticket in front of a judge.

4. Resolve minor problems right away

Numerous mechanical infractions, such a broken taillight, are referred to as “fix-it fines.” The DMV will probably erase the error from your record if you can demonstrate that you resolved it. To drive safely, you must fix the issue; therefore, you should go the extra mile to show that you did so in order to get the ticket dismissed as soon as possible.

5. Clear your record

Expunging a driving record varies by state, so check with your state’s DMV before pursuing this option. Certain infractions can be removed from your MVR in states where it is available. In California, for example, an infraction will be automatically expunged after three years if you have no other violations during that time and have never been convicted of a DUI. If you do not qualify for automatic expungement, you can file for manual expungement, in which case a panel will review the infraction for removal.

6. Request a postponement.

If your state allows it, you may be able to defer certain types of violations before they appear on your record. This is a more proactive option than expungement because an infraction must already be on your record to be expunged. You must pay a small fee and go an entire year without receiving another traffic citation. If you meet those requirements, the violation will not be added to your driving record when the deferment period expires.
